Despite all the spending by Manchester United on players to return them to the pinnacle of English football, their two most high-profile stars, Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez, have struggled badly in recent weeks.
That has brought the pair no shortage of criticism, and the Chilean in particular may have been taken aback by its sheer volume.
Sanchez was doing largely the same things at Arsenal as he is doing at United; trying to do much of the work himself, giving the ball away often in the constant pursuit of making something happen and reportedly cutting a bit of a lone figure.
Under the intense scrutiny of Old Trafford, that hasn’t cut the mustard and the only player receiving anything close to the same level of attention is Pogba.
He has been on something of a collision course with Mourinho since the defeat to Tottenham in January and his best position and attitude has come under question.
Former United defender David May, speaking exclusively to 888Sport, said of the pair’s struggles:
“At times Pogba is a frightening player and on his day he’s unplayable. I just don’t know if the off-field stuff gets in his way, his antics of getting his hair coloured every other day.”
On Sanchez, he added:
“Personally I think he’s trying too hard. He wants to be involved in everything but he needs to be told that standing still is a good position.
“He’s an absolutely fantastic player and everybody knows that after what he did with Arsenal but he needs to take a step back and enjoy it.
“He’s forever looking for the ball but sometimes you have to let the ball find you.”
