Let’s face it – even if Mauricio Pochettino and his impressive Tottenham Hotspur outfit ultimately fail to claim the Premier League title come the culmination of the current season, the 2015/16 campaign will have still nonetheless served to excite Spurs fans far and wide.
As a result of their success, the upcoming summer transfer window will likely take on great importance, especially as several big names have subsequently been linked with a high profile switch to north London.
So then, as 2014 World Cup winner and former Stamford Bridge wide-man Andre Schurrle has cropped up rather heavily upon Tottenham’s transfer radar, would the current Wolfsburg winger really suit playing down at White Hart Lane next season, or should Pochettino ultimately cast his net elsewhere?
Well, whilst the 25-year-old German international has seemingly failed to establish himself as a first team regular at Wolfsburg since making his big money switch from Chelsea back in the winter of 2015, Schurrle still arguably represents one of the most exciting attacking assets currently operating among the European scene.
The quick-footed former Bayer Leverkusen star has indeed struggled with several injury-related issues over the past succession of months, but via his direct style of play inside the final third, impressive link-up capabilities all across the pitch and a keen eye for goal, this is one player who remains worthy of his once glistening reputation.
Chelsea could do with someone of Schurrle’s undoubted class right in the here and now of course, for although the pacey German ultimately went down as little more than a glorified bench-warmer for the Blues just a handful of short seasons ago, the Stamford Bridge faithful have been crying out for someone with his attacking attributes throughout the vast majority of the current campaign.
Tottenham Hotspur’s reported interest in the former Chelsea winger therefore comes as little surprise in the cold light of day, even if Schurrle ultimately fails to represent a like-for-like replacement for Harry Kane should the emerging England star ever find himself unavailable for selection at any stage next term.
Alongside the likes of Christian Eriksen, Erik Lamela and Heung-min Son among the Spurs attacking line-up next season, the 25-year-old German international could easily serve to impress after being cast aside by Chelsea in rather unceremonious circumstances.
Whilst Spurs would probably also need to sign a recognised centre-forward to play second-fiddle to Kane next season in order to compliment the potential summer capture of Schurrle, this is just the kind of move Tottenham need to be considering in order to maintain their lofty position.
So then, although Andre Schurrle has indeed failed to set the Bundesliga alight whilst operating down at the Volkswagen Arena in 2015/16, Spurs mustn’t pass this particular venture up.
